Precision Medicine with Dr. Brian McDonough
The term "Precision Medicine" is used to describe many things but my favorite is: Delivering the right medicine/treatment to the right patient at the right time. This is a succinct description that, of course, covers a very complex topic. There is a lot of work that goes into figuring out what is the right drug, who is the right patient and what is the right time. It will require understanding the genomic, proteomic and metabolomic background of the patient. Lucky for us that technology is advancing rapidly in the areas of genomics research (especially next-generation sequencing (NGS)), proteomics research, AI, cloud computing and storage.
Precision Medicine has been a developing concept for many years. It is real and improving with every technological advancement. Diagnostic testing has been used to guide diagnosis and treatment for decades. Genomics has been used to stratify patients for clinical studies, qualify/disqualify patients from getting a specific drug or to more effectively guide treatment. As the growth of sequencing and proteomics data (and the resulting knowledge accelerates), we are tasked with bringing these results to physicians in a concise and understandable format so they can treat patients more effectively.
